Welcome to the Mir-Raj acres Llewellin Setters home page;

After a long search for a compatible and easy to work with hunting dog we discovered Llewellin Setters, and developed a love for the breed. This love lead us to the decision of dedicating ourselves to breeding and starting their training to be the hunting companions they were Intended to be. So please go through our site, check out our dogs, upcoming litters or available Llewellin puppies and give us a call (or E-Mail) and lets talk Llewellin's

Llewellin Setters History:

Origination of the Llewellin Setters breed started in England by Edward Laverick in the 1800's and then was carried on by R. Purcell Llewellin (for whom the breed was named). Mr. Llewellin started shipping them to the United States in the 1870's.These dogs turned out to be a perfect match for the 160 acre farms of the day used for hunting and field trialing. The proof of this lies in the fact that in the late 1800's to the early 1900's the Llewellin dominated the field trials of that period. They dominated so much that in 1901 the American Field placed the Llewellin Setter in it's stud book, the first strain within a breed to be recognized by a dog registry.

Llewellin Setters Breed Characteristics:

A good Llewellin should have the following characteristics:

Bonnie

  1. Long and deep rib cages (a good indication of lung capacity).

  2. Oval foot pads.

  3. Ears that sit low on the head.

  4. Strong shoulders and hips.

  5. Height - Average height is about 23 inches with the females being a little smaller.

  6. Weight -Typically Males weigh between 45 to 60 pounds and Females between 35 to 50 pounds.

  7. Coat - The coat is flat with light feathering of long length on the legs and tail. Sometimes you can get a throwback trait that is a tuft of hair on top of the head.

  8. Colors - Common color combinations are white and black, white and orange or tri-colors. (Two of our Llewellins are Chestnut tri-color, StarDust and our future stud, Levi.

Along with these comes the outstanding Llewellin temperament that states" I not only want to hunt for you but I need to be your best friend".
